Do engineers really do R&D?

Embedded Guru - Jack Ganssle has a column on embedded.com called Breakpoints. A highly recommended read if you are or want to be a embedded systems developer. Recently Jack wrote a nice article on what actually R&D is meant for and what actually it is. I would like to post that small article over here or else you can have a look at it @ Breakpoints

"Research and Development. R&D. It's the lifeblood of tech companies, and it's what we engineers do all day, every day.

Nonsense.

There's no such thing as R&D. There's R, and there's D, and the two are completely separate activities.

Research is all about discovering new things. It's the science that ultimately enables the products we build, the metaphorical man-behind-the-curtain pulling the levers to control the machines we create.

Research might also involve discovering new algorithms, like new ways to smooth signals or compress data. "New" might mean new to us but not to the world. So we research an idea or a need, and then switch to development mode. The result of research is an approach that one can then implement.

Development is taking known ideas and using them to build products. That's the bulk of an engineer's work. We transform an algorithm to something physical, like converting a CRC algorithm to C code, to VHDL inside an FPGA, or to logic components.

One of my top ten reasons for failed projects is "bad science," or the inability to separate R from D. When a company starts building a product before really understanding what is being measured the schedule is doomed. Start coding an algorithm without it being sharply defined and, at best, you'll wander aimlessly till, with luck, settling on an approach that works.

Research simply can't be scheduled. If you don't believe that, please develop a (realistic) schedule for discovering the cure for cancer.

You might be able to guesstimate simple research schedules, like doing a search for a known algorithm, but even that is, in my experience, very difficult to estimate. The first "Eureka" is often followed by disappointment when a little experimenting reveals some fatal flaw, requiring more research to find a better approach.

Yet I constantly see teams conflating R and D, leading inevitably to late or failed projects.

Sure, there are some projects that necessarily pursue R and D in parallel. But those care rarely be scheduled with any accuracy.

What do you think? Have you ever had a project disaster because you were doing R and the same time as D?"

Future of Nanoelectronics: 20-Hour Battery Life for your Laptop

When people think of nanotechnology in electronics they like to imagine molecular electronics, but it may be the mundane that pushes nanotechnology further into the electronics industry.

Imagine a laptop battery that could last 20 hours rather than 2. That is what you call a unique selling point, and surely something that has long been sought by computer manufacturers.

Some of you might remember NEC letting it be known (back in 2001, then in 2003, and again in 2004--the picture above gives you an indication of how long ago this was) that they had a fuel-cell battery enabled by nanotechnology that would last for 40 hours, and it would hit the market by 2004. It was never released to the market, and is hardly mentioned now except for those who question, “Whatever happened to…?”

The latest entry into the fray of improving upon Li-Ion battery technology comes from Yi Cui, Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford.

The beauty of this solution is…well, it’s not a fuel cell with all its incumbent limitations. Instead it simply replaces the lithium in the anode with silicon nanowires…that’s very simply.

Supposedly, current manufacturing techniques can easily accommodate this solution. That said, it is still just research, although Cui has announced the launching of a start-up to commercialize the technology.

Expect a lot more in the field of battery technology. Pretty safe bet that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Shawshank Redemption...

These days i have been making full use of my internet connection. I downloaded lots of movies - The Shawshank Redemption being the first to be downloaded. I had heard lots of praise for this one on imdb, so wanted to see this one desperately. After watching this film, i can very well say that this is the best movie i have seen till now.

The Shawshank Redemption is an absolute must see movie. The internal message which one should take away from this movie is that one's body can be physically or metaphorically imprisoned, but no one person or thing can take away your hopes or dreams unless you let them. Fantastic movie!!!

I remenber below lines by Red(Morgon Freeman) the most -
"Sometimes it makes me sad though, Andy being gone, I have to remind myself that some birds are not meant to be caged, there feathers are just too bright and when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up, does rejoice but still the place you live in is that much more drab and empty when there gone.
I guess I just miss my friend"

Steeped in symbolism, the film leaves us with plenty of memorable quotes.
As Andy plays the letter duet from The Marriage of Figaro, Red narrates:
"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free."

I highly recommend this film to you all.

Long time.. no see?...

Yes,its been long time since i have REALLY posted something on my blog.I had lots of subjects in my mind to write, but it was maybe sheer laziness and a bit of very hectic work schedule that i was not able to blog this last two months. To be frank, sometimes i really feel bored to sit, think and then write for a post...I think this thing should get automatised...U just think of a topic to blog..and voila the post is published automatically[he he] ! okie..jokes apart ! now that i have a relaxed life, maybe i can contribute more here. Last 4-5 months have really been a roller coaster ride for me on my project work. But it feels great to be a part of one of the best R&D projects of your company. Though i cant reveal much of the project contents(Thanks to Company's code of conduct), i would like to give a brief on my project later. Bye for now.. c ya !

Seven Wonders of the IT World

CIO Magazine recently named its list of Seven Wonders of the IT World:

1. The Linux kernel
2. OQO, Model 02 (smallest PC to run Windows Vista)
3. IBM BlueGene/L (largest supercomputer)
4. The E-sciencE II project (largest computer grid)
5. Google data center in Oregon
6. NASA’s Voyager 1 satellite (the computer farthest from Earth)
7. Floating Webcam at the North Pole

You can look at the full article here

I really like the concept of highlighting the top technological marvels of the IT world.

How about MAE East and MAE West? They are the heart of the Internet. How about the Bill Gates house? It is the ultimate IT-enabled home for hosting business associates. What about Intel Research Labs? It’s pretty cool to see all those people in white coats building the next generation chips that will power computers, phones, and the Internet.

45 days and counting… to the magic of 45nm Hafnium

In 45 days, a new building called “Fab 32” tucked into a sleepy corner of Arizona will come to life. Inside this building a new type of device will be made in incredible numbers. These devices will be able to shop for groceries, analyze proteins, play computer games, model financial markets, allow you to chat to your aunt in Australia, design automobiles and search for aliens. And these devices will do so faster than ever before, cooler than ever before and better than ever before.

I am of course talking about Intel‘s new high-k and metal gate based 45nm chips. The champion of technology and the true revolutionary; Gordon Moore said earlier this year – “…high-k and metal materials marks the biggest change in transistor technology since the introduction of polysilicon gate MOS transistors in the late 1960s.” Like the original silicon MOS transistors, the devices created at this new manufacturing fab will be forged with new ideas and new materials including — Hafnium. The new fab will be the world’s first 45nm (nanometer = teeny-tiny) facility to make Intel’s latest generation microprocessors based on the new high-k metal gate transistors, and do so in colossal numbers.

The first of these new chips were manufactured back in January at the development fab (called D1D - see a video of D1D here) up in Hillsboro, Oregon. In the months following, the chips were tested and perfected by our elite engineers. Those clever boffins also began seeding the technology to the team that will work in Fab 32, the world first high-volume 45nm manufacturing fab in Chandler, Ariz. Two additional 45nm fabs will come online next year in Israel and in New Mexico. These fabs will create the next generation of Core 2 processors.

People have come to expect new chip technology to arrive to the ~2 year beat of Moore’s Law. What the average Joe doesn’t know is that halving the size of things every two years is kinda difficult yet wonderful. As the old analogy goes: If the automobile industry had a ‘Moore’s Law’ effect, your car would go a bazillion miles on one tank of fuel and cost less than tasty morsel from a fast food joints’ dollar menu.

But cramming more and more transistors – now the size of a virus – together is insanely difficult. To do it once is amazing, but to shove more than 400 million of them together in a sensible pattern and in a way where they all just work is little short of miraculous. If not broken, surely the laws of physics have to be coaxed into bending a little? (Wishful thinking.)

And we the consumer enjoy the benefits. Smaller transistors lead to smaller and faster chips, made with new materials. These new materials – a hafnium-based high-k material for the transistor’s insulating layer and metal materials for the transistor gate make the 45nm chips even quicker and even cooler. More so, these 45nm chips will lead to new growth opportunities for Intel and high tech industry. Imagine an ultra mobile device that is half – or even a quarter the size of your laptop today, Internet-connected consumer electronic devices that talk to each other and your TV, or even a powerful, cost-effective processor for emerging economies.

Construction on Fab 32 first began more than 2 years ago and anticipation of the official opening grows each day. Intel is no stranger to building and ramping fabs in preparation for a shift to a new process technology, but this time it means a little more. So in 45 days, you will hear more about Intel’s $3 billion investment in Fab 32.

Charged up Love in Physics Lab

Dear -ve charge,

It was a fine morning that I saw you in Physics Lab and a Torque began acting on me, which made me to rotate about your axis. A force of gravity began attracting me towards you. Every time, day and night, you are oscillating in my mind. But, your strong Electrostatics brother began repelling me.

Since the Units and Dimensions were not correct, I avoided talking face to face. One day, I saw him outside my house and an electric shock was produced in me. So, I went in an Inertial frame and tried to integrate your phone number.

But, every time I failed to apply the Limits. You are the light of my life. By Doppler's effect, I feel that you are very close to my heart. Today morning, a Pseudo force was acting on me which compelled me to write the letter. A wave is traveling from you to me. I request you to meet me at Adiabetic Park. Please don't differentiate me. I am in Tension.

Yours Attractively,
+ve charge

IT Strategy that makes Google work...

“Use customized open source where possible, custom build where necessary, and buy if it's not related to something that will give Google a competitive advantage.”

Behind the seeming simplicity is a mash-up of internally developed software, made-to-order hardware, artificial intelligence, obsession with performance, and an unorthodox approach to people management. Do read this article.

IT Industry - An entry level perspective

A must read article for all those who are looking to join IT industry or are at entry level. Click here.

Understand relativity to know you better.

An excellent article by Piyush Gupta posted on techtribe. i thought i should share it with you all.

"The observation is as much a statement about the observer as it is about the observed."
I know I'm not pointing out anything unique again but definitely will attempt to refresh something that needs attention. Keep following.

The other day I got to read a saying on internet "A diamond with a flaw is better than a common stone that is perfect".

Wow, what a saying !!! It indeed gazes through our instincts.

It is so natural for any of us to start seeing ourselves as the diamond or the stone for the simple fact that they look like objects here and as a natural tendency we tend to compare objects in sayings with 'ourselves' as individual or 'people' in general.

However the 'common stone that is perfect' refers to a person who is not recognized for any outstanding or clearly well developed or superior characteristics.
Whereas going by the definition of words in 'Flawed Diamond' it seems to refer to people who are rare (as diamond is rare) with a lower level subject matter expertise (as they are flawed) but since diamond enjoys quite a popularity, these people must be the recipient of extraordinary recognition, unlike common stone (that makes it common).

But isn't it true that everyone of us can only be good at certain few things and not all? Since it hold true, therefore, we all are flawed at certain things and extremely well at certain few. What makes us a diamond or a stone is just the "recognition" or "recognition by the observer".

Therefore, each person is a potential diamond but only if the observer is looking for diamonds OR common stone if the observer is looking for common stones. Therefore being a Diamond/common stone goes very much in the view of the observer and not the one under observation. Hence observer is also as good an object in the saying as it is the one being observed.

A person who is not recognized for his/her good deeds will likely have low-self-esteem. I find it very important for every common stone to realize two simple things:

1. It is the observer who made him a common stone, it doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't diamond.
2. Some skills on other front demand little more attention to bring them some recognition, that may probably make them a 'Kohinoor' as they were already perfect.

All the left game is about recognition!

Lets play little Mathematics.

If I see a person X and I make the observation that X is bad, the observation is a statement not only about X but also about myself.

A person Y looking at X might make an altogether different observation. So his statement refers to his understanding about X.

Everything in this world of relative reality is relative to the observer. However, the observer thinks what he/she observes is the absolute. Everything that goes on in my mind is relative to me, however, I have a habit of believing that to be the absolute.

All beliefs are relative to the believer. Different believers will naturally believe different beliefs. Simply because beliefs are relative and not absolute.

What is the need to fight over beliefs then?

April Fool Banaya !!!!!!

Keeping with its tradition, Google announced two products this time on April Fool's day - Google TiSp and GMail Paper !

At about 10:00 PM Pacific time (where Google has its headquarters) the day before April 1, 2007, Google changed the login page for Gmail to announce a new service called Gmail Paper. The service offered to allow users of Google's free webmail service to add e-mails to a "Paper Archive," which Google would print (on "96% post-consumer organic soybean sputum") and mail via traditional post. The service would be free, supported by bold, red advertisements printed on the back of the printed messages. Image attachments would also be printed on high-quality glossy paper and be postmarked with their message, though MP3 and WAV files would not be printed.

Google TiSP was a fictitious free broadband service supposedly released by Google. This service would make use of a standard toilet and sewage lines to provide free Internet connectivity at a speed of 8 Mbps (or up to 32 Mbps with a paid plan). A user drops a weighted end of a long, Google-supplied fiber-optic cable in their toilet and flushes it. Around 60 minutes later, the end would be recovered and connected to the Internet by a "Plumbing Hardware Dispatcher (PHD)." The user then connects their end to a Google-supplied wireless router and run the Google-supplied installation media on a Windows XP or Vista computer ("Mac and Linux support coming soon"). Alternatively, a user could request a professional installation, where Google would deploy nanobots through the plumbing to complete the process. The free service would be supported by "discreet DNA sequencing" of "personal bodily output" to display online ads that relate to culinary preferences and personal health.

Keep up the Tradition going Google !!

DSP’s Past Can’t Hold A Candle to its Future

Gene Frantz has written a nice blog on TI Video360 Blog. You can read his blog here. This is what his vision for year 2020.

"Here I am in the year 2020. It seems like a good place to position myself, as it implies clear vision. I’m in my car, racing to the airport. Of course, I’m not actually driving, that’s so 2010. No, automotive vision has reached a stage where cars drive themselves. Gridlock is a thing of the past as traffic moves in perfect syncopation. I’d be bored if I couldn’t instantly access my entire video and music library. I tell the inboard computer to load the Rolling Stones 2018 farewell concert. You’d think that Mick Jagger would have a heart attack the way he bounds across the stage – and at his age. Of course, if he did, sensors would instantly warn him of impending cardiac trouble and implanted medication would be dispensed. Do you remember when impending medical emergencies came as a surprise?

This reminds me, I have a medical checkup today. I download my vital signs into an e-mail and shoot it off to my doctor over my cell phone. I gave myself an MRI at home last night and include that information as well. Doctor Frantz – my grandson – instantly responds, giving me a clean bill of health. I can’t believe he didn’t become an engineer. Still, he did finish at the top of his class at Oxford, and never had to leave Texas. Distance learning has taken on a whole new meaning thanks to real-time, life-like video conferencing.

I have a conference, as well, and better check in. It’s a quick team meeting with Tahiti, Juneau and Rio de Janeiro. We’ve eliminated the need for most business travel and, thankfully, jet lag. Phone lag is still a problem, it’s 2 a.m. in UAE, but we’re working on that as well. I say a word and I am instantly connected. The video is so real, it’s like I’m sitting across the table rather than across the world. I speak in English and my words are translated into perfect French and Portuguese. After 15 minutes I beg off. I have a plane to catch.

No business travel here – strictly pleasure, the only reason to fly. My wife turns off her virtual Sudoku. Did I leave the stove on, she asks. Some things never change. I access my home monitor and confirm that she did, indeed, leave it on. I turn it off and check that my security systems are functioning properly. The cameras know when to alert me of anything strange and are also programmed to recognize my friends and family – which is good because my daughter is picking up my social security check ¬apparently the only piece of mail I still receive. You see, my wife made me retire again!

The airport is crowded but moves as quickly as the traffic. It takes one minute to get through security as my implanted information and my person are scanned. I lose my wife to one of the gift shops and quickly check her GPS position. She’s buying the latest e-book and with a scan of her ID chip, we’re on our way. In two hours we’ll be in Rome, just enough time for a short nap for this tired digital self."

I liked the last sentence where he says - "We are at a thrilling time in history, and life as we know it is about to change. It’s already happening – we will make it happen together."

Thinking like a genius

"Even if you're not a genius, you can use the same strategies as Aristotle and Einstein to harness the power of your creative mind and better manage your future"...
1. Look at problems in many different ways, and find new perspectives that no one else has taken (or no one else has publicized!)
2. Visualize!
3. Produce! A distinguishing characteristic of genius is productivity.
4. Make novel combinations. Combine, and recombine, ideas, images, and thoughts into different combinations no matter how incongruent or unusual.
5. Form relationships; make connections between dissimilar subjects.
6. Think in opposites.
7. Think metaphorically.
8. Prepare yourself for chance.

Texas Instruments DaVinci™ Technology Spirit of Invention

The best video i have seen till now.

Texas Instruments DSP Ad

I love Texas Instruments...

GMail rocks...Added New features...

My favorite e-mail service - GMail has launched some new features...

Now Gmail can check for the mail you receive at your other email accounts. You can retrieve your mail (new and old) from up to five other email accounts and have them all in Gmail. Then you can even create a customized 'From:' address, which lets you send messages from Gmail, but have them look like they were sent from another one of your email accounts. Please note that you can only retrieve mail from accounts that have POP3 access enabled. Learn More

This feature is currently only enabled for a limited number of users. GMail is working on making it more available soon. I am one of the lucky ones. Look for it in the 'Accounts' tab in Settings.

Google is great ! GMail is already having so many excellent features... i wonder what else Google is looking to add into it.. mind you, GMail is still in the Beta version !!

Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us

I found this very nice video... A must see for all.

<

SOFTWARE UPGRADE NOTICE

Nice one... Do read.

Last year a friend of mine upgraded GirlFriend 6.0 to Wife 1.0 and found that it's a memory hog leaving very little system resources for other applications. He is only now noticing that Wife 1.0 also is spawning Child-Processes which are further consuming valuable resources.
No mention of this particular phenomenon was included in the product brochure or the documentation, though other users have informed him that this is to be expected, due to the nature of the application.

Not only that, Wife 1.0 installs itself such that it is always launched at system initialization where it can monitor all other system activity.
He's finding that some applications such as PokerNight 10.3, BeerBash 2.5, and PubNight 7.0 are no longer able to run, crashing the system when selected (even though they always worked fine before). At installation, Wife 1.0 automatically installs undesired Plug-Ins such as MotherInLaw 55.8 and BrotherInLaw Beta release. As a consequence system performance seems to diminish with each passing day.

Some features he'd like to see in the upcoming Wife 2.0:

  • A "Don't remind me again" button;
  • A Minimize button;
  • An install shield feature that allows Wife 2.0 to be installed with the option to uninstall at anytime without the loss of cache and other system resources;
  • An option to run the network driver in promiscuous mode which would allow the systems hardware probe feature to have greater use.

Another friend decided to avoid all the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by sticking with Girlfriend 2.0. Even here, however, I found many problems.
Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 2.0 on top of Girlfriend 1.0. You must uninstall Girlfriend 1.0 first. Other users say this is a long standing bug which everyone should have been aware. Apparently the versions of Girlfriend have conflicts over shared use of the I/O port. You'd think they would have fixed such a stupid bug by now.
To make matters worse, the uninstall program for Girlfriend 1.0 doesn't work very well leaving undesirable traces of the application in the system.
Another annoying problem -- all versions of Girlfriend continually pop-up annoying messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0

***** BUG WARNING *****

Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before executing a self - uninstallation. Then Mistress 1.1 will refuse to install, claiming insufficient system resources.

***** BUG WORK-AROUNDS *****

To avoid the above bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system and never run any file transfer applications such as Laplink 6.0. Also, beware of similar share-ware applications that have been known to carry viruses that may affect Wife 1.0.

Another solution would be to run Mistress 1.0 via a UseNet provider under an anonymous name. Here again, beware of the viruses which can accidentally be downloaded from the UseNet.

Want to reduce Firefox Memory Consumption?

Firefox seems to need more memory when I have it open for a long time and surf to many different websites. I was never able to find out why it behaved this way and assumed that it was either a memory leak or an extension which would be responsible for this behavior.

It seems that my assumption was wrong. Firefox saves the last 50 visited websites of a single session in memory which means that it could add up quickly if you visit lots of content filled websites. The reason behind this is that it is faster to access a already visited website if it still resides in memory instead of loading it from disk cache or from the server.

50 sites on the other hand seems a lot to me. I usually do not visit sites again that I visited a while ago - I tend to visit many different sites and only a few ones more than once daily. The fix is relatively simple. Type about:config in the Firefox address bar and search for the term:

browser.sessionhistory.max_entries

Right-click the entry, select modify from the list and change it to a lower value. I set it to 5 which works well for my surfing habits. Other values might be better for yours.

Why use Google Search...USE CLUSTY !

How many times you have searched for something on Google search and gone to page no 4 to see the result ?... Not often right?... What happens many times you want to search for something and maybe the result you wanted is on 4th page..typically this happens with tutorials n all...but you do not go to 4th page to see the result...

Can we have solution to this?.. Why not have the search results clustered ?

This is what CLUSTY does. Its a whole new way to search the web.

Clusty queries several top search engines, combines the results, and generates an ordered list based on comparative ranking. This "metasearch" approach helps raise the best results to the top and push search engine spam to the bottom.

But what really makes Clusty unique is what happens after you search. Instead of delivering millions of search results in one long list, this search engine groups similar results together into clusters. Clusters help you see your search results by topic so you can hone in on exactly what you’re looking for or discover unexpected relationships between items. Rather than scrolling through page after page, the clusters help you find results you may have missed or that were buried deep in the ranked list.

And with a name like Clusty, it’s gotta be good!.. I liked it. It simplifies your search a lot. About the results that it gives, since it is taking the search results from top search engines... The search is good !! So i recommend you all to use CLUSTY !!

SUN Tech Days 2007

Its been more than 24 hours since i attended SUN Tech days 2007, But the effect is as fresh as it was 24 hours ago. Yes, I attended SUN Tech days 2007 yesterday. "Awesome" is the word to describe it literally. Sun Tech days is a worldwide developer conference that SUN organises. In India, it is during 21-23 Feb, at Hyderabad.

The major 3 day event is supposed to take place at Hyderabad, but SUN also organized a 1 day event in cities - Pune, Mumbai, Delhi. I attended the Pune Event. The organizer's had arranged a satellite link to telecast welcome and keynote session. The SUN keynote was presented by Rich Green - SUN's visionary behind web technologies. The sessoin was excellent. He talked about web 2.0, open source and future of it as he sees it. This then followed with a SUN Technical Demo of some of their products not released yet.

Then we had some live presentations by SUN engineers. It included Java SE6 features, Java Persistence APIs. Then we had the best presentation of the day - Solaris The Developer Friendly OS. Frankly speaking, i had attended the event only for this session. The presentation was by Ananth Shrinivas - A SUN engineer at B'lore. He talked about various features of Solaris which really took the crowd to amaze. The features like DTrace, ZFS, Containers - They really cought my eye. Thats for Developers for Sure !!

I think this was a day i will remember for a long time - Nice experience ! Not to mention i had to bunk my company work, but it was worth !

What is Digital Signal Processor ?

A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor designed specifically for digital signal processing, generally in real-time.

Characteristics of Digital Signal Processors

Image:DSP_Block.GIF

Architectural features of digital signal processors

Digital signal processing can be done on general-purpose microprocessors. However, a digital signal processor contains architectural optimizations to speed up processing. These optimizations are also important to lower costs, heat-emission and power-consumption.

Program flow

  • Floating-point unit integrated directly into the data-path.
  • Pipelined architecture
  • Highly parallel accumulator and multiplier
  • Special looping hardware. Low-overhead or Zero-overhead looping capability

Memory architecture

Data operations

  • Saturation arithmetic, in which operations that produce overflows will accumulate at the maximum (or minimum) values that the register can hold rather than wrapping around (maximum+1 doesn't overflow to minimum as in many general-purpose CPUs, instead it stays at maximum). Sometimes various sticky bits operation modes are available.
  • Fixed-point arithmetic is often used to speed up arithmetic processing.
  • Single-cycle operations to increase the benefits of pipelining.

Instruction sets

Hello World Collection

"Hello World" is the first program one usually writes when learning a new programming language. This collection includes 311 Hello World programs in many more-or-less well known programming languages, plus 51 human languages.

StumbleUpon

Recently i came across an excellent firefox add-on : StumbleUpon !! StumbeUpon installs a toolbar in your browser and lets you collaborative rate content. This improves the recommendations for other users and behavior matching is used to find users like you and pages that you haven't seen before, on-demand. One indicator I use for the popularity of a social bookmarking site is how much inbound traffic I get from it, and I've seen a clear switch during the year from del.icio.us bookmarks to StumbleUpon referrers. StumbleUpon reports that it has over 1.7 million registered users and growing. Bottom Line: Del.icio.us is still my favorite bookmarking service, but for true content discovery, StumbleUpon now makes it much easier to find new content than del.icio.us does. StumbleUpon is a winner by a nose for taking content discovery to the next step.

The Firefox Kid

A few days ago I came across the IEEE Spectrum magazine's November issue. I was surprised to see a 21 year boy on the cover page with the title "The Firefox Kid". I did not understand what this is !! What a 21 year old boy doing on the IEEE Spectrum's cover page and what is this relation with Firefox. So I just went through with the article. I was more than amazed by what i read. So I thought i should share this with you all.

The kid's name is BLAKE ROSS. and hold your breath !.. He is the Co-founder of Firefox !! Has this not amazed you?..I know, but ya thats true. He began baddling in s/w at the age of 3. Then he joined Netscape when he was 15. He has a major part in developing Mozilla Firefox..The best Internet browser today ! He surely is an Inspiration for many of us !!!

Nice Quote

I read this quote while browsing...This really matches my thinking...

Joel Spolsky from JoelOnSoftware.com says this about "Programming from Ground Up":

"Trying to be a programmer without understanding how a CPU works is like trying to practice medicine without learning anatomy. Sure, you can have limited success curing patients with medical advice gleaned from Google, but on the whole you're going to be a pretty bad doctor. For those who missed out on learning assembly language, I highly recommend working through this book, even if you'll never program in assembly again. I promise that all kinds of lights will go on in your head and you'll be a vastly better programmer."

Programming from the ground up

Today i found a nice free e book "Programming from the ground up" . This book is an introduction to programming using Linux Assembly language.

Programming from the Ground Up uses Linux assembly language to take you a step at a time through these concepts:

  • How the processor views memory
  • How the processor operates
  • How programs interact with the operating system
  • How computers represent data internally
  • How to do low-level and high-level optimization
The book can be freely downloaded from download.savannah.nongnu.org/releases/pgubook/ProgrammingGroundUp-1-0-booksize.pdf I have read a first few chapters and believe me..Its really amazing. The way the book makes us think while programming is quite extra ordinary. Even the computer architecture (complex thing..isnt it?) has been explained in a very good manner. Even a non electronics guy can understand the working.. It is that easily explained.Must Read for any programmer even if you are not going to work in assembly at any point in your life..But this will surely change the way you think when you program.

"The Venice Project" is now "Joost" officially

Joost is a new venture of Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and kazaa). The pair plans to develop software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer tv technology.

The program is based on
P2PTV technology and is expected to deliver near-TV resolution images. As opposed to streaming technology (servers -> clients) P2P TV technology (streams are resent from multiple viewers to new viewers) moves the distribution costs from the channel owner to the internet service providers. P2P TV technology is less efficient than streaming technology since it requires more global upstream capacity than downstream requests. CDN technology offers best of both worlds: no centralized servers and still high volume viewers.

The project is in beta testing currently.

Going deep into Windows

Microsoft has a discussion forum called Channel 9 where MS developers discuss about MS products. this really is a cool place to know these products from perceptive of the people who have developed them. It include videos as well. I just visited a topic called "Going deep into Windows". this is a 4 part video series. If you want to understand how Windows works, you must see this. The video features Dave Probert, Windows Kernel architect who explains the Windows NT architecture in very detailed and sophisticated manner. This is the best explanation i have seen so far. Dave here explains the architecture in comparison with UNIX. Processes, threads, multiprocessing, concurrency ... I wonder how these concepts can be so simple. Dave really is a great teacher. This video has really changed my thinking in looking at OSs. great job done , Dave !

Training on Windows internals..

The last weekend was one of the best weekends in my life. Hold on... i did not go for party, neither did i go on a picnic. but, i had attended Windows Internals training... confused?... Yes, I say this because i gained whole lot of things from this. To give you a background, I am a BE(E&TC) guy...I never had a course on OS in my syllabus...I had read Galvin in last month or so..but you know, the concepts get cleared if somebody is there to explain the things in a little simpler or detailed manner for understanding...then you can grasp concepts in lesser time... i feel there's nothing bad if you get your concepts cleared by some one rather than to develop wrong concepts...I have seen people who are very confident but with wrong concepts... so i was dieing to attend this training session...

The training was taken by Prasad Candade from Metaparadigm, India. The concepts were explained in details. The architecture of Windows NT, context switching, multi threading, SMP systems ... he explained all this with ease. The training was for 4 days...But these 4 days saved at least 15 days of me reading Windows internals by Solomon for concepts understanding. In this time only, I found a link for channel9. I had never came across something like this from Microsoft. truly, this really is a great initiative in order to spread knowledge. This really was a pleasant surprise. I will write more on Channel9 in my next blog. Cheers.
